When coming up with a game concept, I wanted to do something that centered around Chinese mythology. As someone who is of mixed heritage, it is important to me to create more forms of representation of what it means to be Chinese-Canadian. I believe that one of the best and most engaging ways to learn about one’s heritage is through story-telling, so I decided to use a well-known Chinese myth, the story of Chang’e, as my subject matter.    

Personally, when looking for games to play, I am most drawn to beautiful visuals, so my main focus when creating the prototype for Realm of Gods was aesthetics. Since the main objective of the game is to explore a realm, I spent a lot of time organizing the environment's layout. I decided on using a purple colour scheme to add a certain element of elegance to my prototype. In terms of technical features, Realm of Gods’ main function is having notes pop up once an item is collected. I considered adding a timer to the notes so that they disappeared after a certain interval, however, I decided that it might be preferred for the player to have the information present throughout the game. I can definitely attest to missing information in games because I couldn’t read fast enough. 

Overall, the experience of using Unity to create a digital prototype was an interesting one. I have learned where my interests lay in terms of game design (i.e. visuals not coding) and will take the acquired knowledge with me into the future.
